Allgemein Grotesk
Allgemein Grotesk is the comprehensive revision and further development of the 2001 typeface ‘Wedding Sans’, a Grotesk typeface that combined round and angular letterforms in a single alphabet. The combination of square and round forms of Wedding Sans created an irritating as well as visually lively rhythm. Allgemein Grotesk now takes up this basic idea of mixing forms, but lets the user control the degree of combination via OpenType features. Without activating the stylistic sets, Allgemein Grotesk looks like a “generic” Grotesk typeface (hence the German name ‘Allgemein Grotesk’). However, the more alternative angular characters and stylistic sets are selected, the more the character of the typeface changes to a constructed-geometric typeface, without ever losing its balance and coherence. The letters of Allgemein Grotesk are also more refined compared to Weddings Sans, with stronger stroke contrast as the weight becomes bolder.
Currently, Allgemein Grotesk Beta includes six weights from Light to Super and matching Italics, each with advanced layout features such as figure sets, symbols, arrows, fractions and broad language support. It is accompanied by a monospace version, which so far includes five weights. In addition, other styles such as Condensed, Narrow and Extended are in the making and planned for a future release. All fonts are accompanied by the particularly edgy ‘Hard Edge’ variants.
